Eliza Schurman is a Nova Scotian artist working in oil, acrylic, pastel, watercolour, ceramic, and mixed media. Her subject matter is nature, be it landscape or portraiture/life drawing. For Eliza art is the spiritual expression of her love of nature and the environment. Though her art has been realistic, abstract images have begun to emerge in her work, an evolution which she attributes to meditation: “It teaches me to see light manifested in form.” Encouraged by her teachers and family, she began private art lessons at the age of twelve. At seventeen Eliza started studying with prominent Nova Scotian painter, John Cook. Later in life, she enrolled at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, graduating on her 50th birthday with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, with honours in studio and ceramics. She continues to hone her skills by taking specialized workshops with accomplished artists in Canada and the US. Eliza herself teaches painting in Nova Scotia, Cuba, and France. Over the past three decades Eliza has had many solo and group shows. Her paintings are in private collections in Canada, the United States, New Zealand, Switzerland, South Africa, Cuba and England.
